As you travel from the many connecting roads that meander from the quaint village of Kilconnell steeped in history from its imposing Friary ruins to the villages of Aughrim and its blood soaked history through to New Inn & Cappataggle spare a thought for the many fitness walkers that still trawl these roads as the nights draw in and the weather takes yet another turn for the worse. Not only do they have to put up with the traffic amongst many other obstacles on the road they will this weekend have to endure the Halloween eerieness that comes with the season. As the darkness closes in and the figure in the distance looms larger as you draw near only to vanish when you look up again all we will say is stay safe from the ghoulies & goblins, traffic & Trick or Treat kidz. Wear something luminous, carry a torch and keep to the edges when SOMETHING APPROACHES!! and special note to the many children out there looking for treats- when a grown up gives you fruit & nuts they really are trying to be nice giving you healthy stuff!!! Oh yes on a health and safety note always check the Best Before Dates on the sweets you get!!!!

Recently we had some ESB lads putting up poles at the back of the house, no problem there you would think apart from the public eyesore to the surrounding landscape, the decrease in property values and the controversy surrounding the effects on health that these poles bring (have the ESB never realised in this day and age that underground is the way to go! ) but there I was doing my chores at the back window when a blue helmeted worker just casually strolled across my back garden carrying a chain saw no less and when he was challenged he looked incredulous that the home owner had actually asked had he permission to walk on his property!!! Given that there were cars outside the house and all windows and doors were open to enjoy the sun it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to work out that someone was in and ask permission !! So rudeness award of the week goes to the ESB!!! I know this event is not going to register anything on the richter scale for other people but it sure annoyed the hell out of me. A VERY PERSONAL VIEW.

We held our first meeting of the book club last night in An Tain. (Thurs 05/03/09 ) There was a nice little turnout and if it wasn't for the cold evening I'm sure we would have had more. I've never been involved in anything like this before, so I wasn't too sure what to expect. I had the impression that we would be sitting around all night like a group of bookworms talking about authors. It wasn't like that at all and we had an enjoyable evening discussing various topics, many of which would keep this discussion forum going for a week! It struck me afterwards that a love of reading is the common interest we share and therefore that is a good enough reason to meet up and have a laugh now and again. I met people last night who I've never met before and I loved their sense of humour. I'm already looking forward to meeting them again. We did talk about books too of course and some of the authors whose work we enjoy reading. When it came to choosing a book to talk about at our next meeting, we decided to opt for one by an Irish author. We decided to keep it simple for our first book and chose a novel that is easy to obtain. Author - Roddy Doyle Book - "The woman who walked into doors" We decided to meet on the last Thursday of every month in An Táin at 8 pm. Next meeting will be on March 26th.

Cappataggle hurlers were outdone at Croke Park at the weekend by Blarney's skilful Left Corner Forward Colin Murphy who scored a massive 1-9 points. Cappataggle had great support on the day in this AIB ALL IRELAND Club Intermediate Hurling title but always appeared to be playing catch up and whenever they got the breaks Blarney seemed to reply immediately. The clubs final appearance should be seen as a great achievement and all Cappy hurlers and their dedicated supporters who made the long trip should be satisfied on a great achievement. Ged Mannion RIP.

An eye witness (coming from Leonards Bar at the time) was heard to say 'I saw a bright red light in the night sky flying high over the village' and I only had a mineral!!!! HONEST!!!!

As the nights draw in and the weather deteriorates walkers are especially at risk if they do not take the proper precautions when setting out on their journeys. A few simple safety tips to follow 1. Always wear a HI VIZ bib when walking, even if you set off in daylight your way home may be made in darkness and they are handy enough to be folded away in your pocket2. Invest in a torch as those verges may not be too secure especially with roads susceptible to flooding and you can also be seen by drivers3. When you see a vehicle coming towards you take a few seconds to step of the road and let the driver pass as you may see him but they may not see you!

Click on the link to have some of these questions answered and more.
